March 15, 2010

Hola!
Yeah I am excited to go to the temple tomorrow. I bought everything I need beforehand, everything for bout $15 haha. Wow, what a week. The beginning of the week there were a lot of clouds in the sky and a lot of fires from people burning their garbage. It was bad. You could see the smog in the air. I would often use a towel to breath through haha. Well, we have one baptism planned for this week and the next week we have two and mother and a daughter. That is one thing that we try to focus on is teaching families, helping families become closer together. We were teaching a family of 3 but they had other things that they had to do every Sunday so they couldn’t go to the church and thus couldn’t progress. Yesterday we had a big rain downpour. By the end of the day my feet were soaked! But I’m not complaining. I eat well here but the walking and the work is why I am loosing the weight.
I haven´t heard from Austin yet, but I got an email from Elder Vance at
matthew.vance@myldsmail.net asking if I had Elder Bishop’s address. But I can only send emails to one address so I can’t tell him that I don’t have it yet
I still have my goal of finishing the Book of Mormon by the end of the month. Right now I am in Alma 12 but we have about a 2 hour bus ride tomorrow to the temple so I can get in a lot of reading there. I love sharing the Book of Mormon with the people here. I am excited to share it with more people here that are looking for truth.
Now my Visa card. I haven’t used it once because when I got here the church gave me another one and I use it because it takes it out of the mission fund. I’m not sure what happens with the funds that I saved up. I think it goes in to the ward mission fund. Talk to the bishop. I still have about $140 American that I took out before I got here. I exchange $20 once in a while and get about G 90 which is quite a lot. But I have my Visa card if I need more funds for the month. But seeing that I will only be able to do that on p-days, I will send an email with information on how much I took out.
Well that’s cool to hear that San Lorenzo is a place that missionaries from our stake go haha. We had a stake conference yesterday in the stake center in San Lorenzo. Pres Wade spoke and his wife, and the Temple Pres. and his wife and the stake pres. who is 29 years old haha
Well we’re having good weather here, cloudy and a little cold. It’s nice. Plus when we walk we have a breeze haha. Well send my love. I sent a letter to Grandma and Grandpa Spackman and Rodgers and Uncle Myrle. I am going to be sending one to Aunt Kay right away. Thanks for all your love and support. Have a great trip to Florida!

March 8, 2010

¡Hola!
Wow what a week! We had worked really hard the whole week and had about 5 people with baptism dates but none of them showed up for church!! But Sunday we had a great baptism so it was a good week. It was a lady named Trifina (Trifi) pronounced ” Tree-fe”. She is a great lady who missionaries have been working with for a long time (over a year). She is a great person. My companion baptized her, and I, my comp and the 1st counselor in the ward confirmed her. It was really powerful. I totally forgot to mention but I got the package that you sent me at zone conference last week. I forgot to mention that in my last email. Everything was in it. Thanks for the Eatmore bars. They were delicious. And during Zone conference, I picked up all my temple clothes. Good thing too because the 16th our zone is going to the temple! I am so excited. ( All in Spanish haha.) I think I am planning on sending a package home soon. I picked up some things here that are kind of cool.
Well it has been a hot summer and I am ready for winter. I remember one day when it reached 50C and my comp has been telling me that it can get down to 0C, so I am ready. Of the two months I have been in Paraguay (wow 2 months already) I have lost 35 lbs!!
 Well our mission goals for January and February were not met so this month’s goals for baptisms have gone up because president doesn’t want us to lose one soul from our goals. The March goal was actually 250. I had it wrong. But this month he set the goal at 384!! The mission held a special fast and President knows that we can get it. He is such a powerful speaker and all his letters have such a strong spirit with them
The time difference right now is 4 hours. I am 4 hours ahead, and when we switch you will go one hour forward and we will go one hour back and we’ll be at a 2 hour difference. P-days are good. We get up clean, exercise, then take a colectivo (bus) to San Lorenzo which is a one hour trip and grab some lunch, buy our food for the week and go back to our house put the food away walk to the computer shop that we use write emails, go back to the house, plan, and get to work. I have a goal to read the book of Mormon and finish it by the end of this month. I just finished Jacob, and chapter 5 is so hard to focus with haha. Well we don’t have any people with baptismal dates for this week but next week we have two. Thanks for the quotes that you send me Dad. I have them all printed off, well I think I got all of them. I read them often. It sounds like you are studying a lot, too. Well thanks for all the support. Paraguay is so unique. I am picking up a little Guarani. Well nobody got mail last week at district meeting. It wasn´t sent to us, it was still in the office so I think that other package will get here tomorrow. Thanks for everything!

Asuncion, Paraguay Temple

Mud!

My new bag - made in Paraguay

March 1, 2010

Hola Familia,
How are you guys doing? Man, we had an interesting week. A lot of rain and humidity but that’s okay but the other day I fell in the mud twice so I am glad that that is over. All our roads are dirt save a couple main roads. So when it rains and the streets turn into small mud rivers it makes the statement, ¨I will go where you want me to go¨ come true haha.
Well we worked with our mission leader this week for an hour. That was good. And we are trying to work on a ward mission plan. We are not sure what is happening with the lady who had a baptism date but we have one for the 15 of March and some people that are really cool that we are teaching.
I told the bishop here that I can play the piano because they didn’t have any one to do that. But the week I went to go play there was a lady that did it so I am just waiting. If they need someone to play, I can.
I can relate to Brother Webster a bit. Our bathroom is so small, but it has a door. But I can say for a fact that I have forgotten what carpet is, well, the chapel that we go to for zone conference has it but that was for only one day. Spanish is coming slowly. I have to say it is a great feeling to be able to understand people and to read and understand. I can’t read fluently but I can usually get the point.
One of the members told us that part of the reason it is so hot here is that there are 3 small thin areas in the ozone layer above Paraguay because of all the pollution.
I don’t mean to attack the Calgary mission about baptisms but the mission goal here is 300 for March. And each month it goes up, last month it was 250
And Dad, thank you for the quotes. I love reading them. They really help 
Tell grandma and grandpa thank you for the letters. And I will be sending replies. I just don’t have too much time. But I will make sure the replies are sent off ASAP.
Well thank you for your support. It is wonderful to be able to walk with a purpose for 2 years, because, I only have 2 years.
I love being here and thank you for all your support
Con Amor,
